X-ray
- Suspicion of ileus
- Investigation of constipation
- Suspected X-ray dense foreign bodies
Ultrasound
- Diffuse abdominal pain without known basic condition and little suspicion of serious disease.
- Superficial tumours. Distinguishing between cyst and solid tumour
CT (with peroral and i.v. contrast)
- Diffuse abdominal pain particularly with known serious basic condition or strong suspicion of serious disease.
- Extent of malignity
- Investigation of enlarged lymphatic nodes in the abdomen
- Trauma, suspected haemorrhage, rupture.
- Suspected hernia, spigelian hernia
- With soft tissue tumours in the abdominal wall
NB: With colon symptoms, CT colonography should be performed
MRI
- With uncertain CT findings if further clarification is needed, for example when investigating tumours.
